Jimmy left this morning to pick up Tommy in Durango. Mackie and I stayed in town to watch the local 4th of July parade. After the parade, we tried to shop in town but it was sooo crowded we gave up and walked back to the RV. The population of this little town is around 500 but it swells to twenty to thirty thousand over the 4th of July. Any place you can find a clearing in the mountains, you will probably find a tent. About the time we got to the RV, it started pouring down rain so that was a good call. The rain stopped in time for the annual evening potluck and firework show. The firemen had said that they had over $32,000 worth of fireworks to shoot and it was going to be the biggest show ever for Silverton. They are already known as the best show in the four corners. Unfortunately, one of the volunteer firefighters was injured about a half hour into the show and had to be airlifted to Durango and then onto Denver. The show was not completed after that. Praying for this firefighter's recovery.
Random pictures from the parade:
The local band that plays on the corner every Sunday evening (weather permitting).
They are surprisingly quite good.
VERY LOUD! Scares the little kids & dogs:
We asked if they had sunscreen and he replied "That's all we have on."
Biker chicks:
Love watching these guys "crawl" over each other:
And the parade ALWAYS ends with a good soaking. If you try to hide, they will find you. Only escape is inside a vehicle or building;
A few of the people who enjoyed the potluck:
