Thursday, June 26, 2014 US BASIN, BROWN'S GULCH, SILVER CROWN/CLOUD

Yesterday, I drove over a 100 miles to Montrose to pick up some antibiotics for Jimmy.  Looks like he is in need of a root canal and the endodontist in Durango cannot see him for another week.  Our dentist back home called in a prescription to help with the swelling.  Needless to say, he is not feeling so great right now.  After everybody slept in late this morning, we decided to do a trail close to town.  I was the designated driver, but thank goodness, I had a good spotter.  Couple of challenges today.

We started up U.S. Basin which is usually a pretty easy drive.

Stopping off at an old mine operation:
Mackie finds an old oil can inside the shed:

Back on the trail and going up,  Doesn't look so bad in the picture, but this is one of the  most difficult challenges I have ever driven:  snowdrift on the passenger side, about a 4-foot drop-off on the driver side.  Jimmy had to get out and spot me. I was pretty sure we wouldn't fit without tipping over:
Close as I could get on the right; but managed to keep the all the tires on the trail:
Looking back; we made it:
 Nice drive thru Brown's Gulch

Checking out another old mining operation:

We were headed toward Iron Town but encountered a snowdrift that we couldn't clear, so we went back out on the Hwy and turned off on Jim's Curiosity aka the Silver Crown/Silver Cloud mining operation.  Once again, we were stopped at the waterfall.  Jimmy wanted me to drive across it, but I felt that the volume of water was way too much to cross.  Will come back later after some more of the snow has melted and the falls calms a bit.

Jimmy was sitting in the backseat & snapped this pix of Mackie in the side mirror.  She looks like she might be thinking "What have I gotten myself into?"  Or maybe, she wanted to cross the falls?
